What Does Hippo Offer?
The value of home insurance policies through Hippo largely tracks with our suggested priorities when shopping for home insurance, with savings of up to 25% off premiums and coverage that is more extensive than many of its competitors. In addition to standard protection for your dwelling and personal items, Hippo’s base policies offer up to four times more coverage on average than competitors. Including coverages such as:
- Equipment breakdown coverage
- Water backup coverage
- Computers coverage
- Service line coverage
Customers in qualifying states also receive a complimentary Smart Home Starter Kit with any policy purchase.
Hippo’s quoted packages are broken down into tiers based on coverage needs and any initial savings can be further reduced through a variety of discounts and complimentary benefits, including:
- Early Bird: Start your policy at least eight days in advance of your old policy expiring.
- Recent home purchase: New homeowners receive a discount if they’ve purchased their first home or owned their home for less than a year.
- Fire extinguisher: Receive a discount if you have one or more extinguishers strategically placed in your home.
- Sprinkler system: Have an automated internal sprinkler system installed in your home.
- Homeowners association: Receive a discount if you’re a member of a homeowners association.
- Smart home: Activate and install the complimentary home monitoring kit and receive a discount. The smart device protects you home from fire, water and theft damage with a two-sensor monitoring system.
- Hail-resistant roof: Receive a discount if you have a certified hail-resistant roof.
- Storm shutters: Homeowners with storm shutters installed on their windows receive a discount.
- Wind exclusion: Save money by opting out of coverage of wind and hail damage from your policy.
What to Expect on the Site?
Hippo’s level of customer service is ironically both its best feature and biggest area of weakness. The company prides itself on offering a superior level of service to its customers, as evidenced by its 24/7 support team and ease of use. Hippo also operates from the philosophy of not just covering damage when it happens, but helping homeowners prevent it in the first place.
However, for such a forward-thinking and technology-driven company, Hippo’s claims processing may seem elementary to some. There’s no option to file insurance claims through Hippo’s website. Instead, you’re required to call them in. While there’s something to be said for a human touch, the lack of an online interface (not to mention end-to-end tracking) seems out of step with the company’s tech-focused approach in other areas of its business.
Another limiting factor is availability. Right now, Hippo is not available in all 50 states. While this is disappointing, it’s important to keep in mind that Hippo is still a young company and we should expect to see their service territory increase as they grow.
One of Hippo’s biggest innovations is the way it handles quotes. Instead of making you go through page after page of complicated questions about your home, Hippo asks you to type in your address and answer six simple questions.
Using predictive technology and data from multiple sources, including property records and permit filings, Hippo streamlines the application process and can deliver a quote in as little as 60 seconds. This may not seem like enough time to generate reliable information, but Hippo claims its quotes are more accurate because they rely more on data than subjective human answers.
The Bottom Line
Hippo is undoubtedly one of the most exciting names in the home insurance game right now. The good news is their product mostly lives up to the hype. The company’s quick and easy quote process, affordable rates, and innovative policies make it an attractive option for homeowners, especially if you have a lot of questions about the process. However, Hippo’s lack of online claim filing and limited availability show the company still has room to grow. Still, for a company that’s been in the market for such a short time, Hippo’s offerings are quite impressive and should only become easier to recommend as time goes on.
Homeowners insurance may not be required by law, but it’s often a stipulation of your mortgage. In fact, about 95% of homes are insured. This makes it one more thing that people—especially new homeowners—need to navigate. Hippo’s connectivity and commitment to customer experience makes the process a bit friendlier.
