Pros and Cons

Signup Process

Match’s signup process is very straightforward, with new users being automatically directed to the signup page upon visiting the site.

After providing basic information like your name, gender, the gender of the person you’re looking to Match with and your ZIP code, Match then asks for more personal information and preferences, which Match uses to connect you with ideal matches.

Among other descriptors, this information relates to:

Most of these questions simply require you to select an answer from a drop-down menu, but as you near the end of the signup process, you’re asked to write out a number of short paragraphs describing unique traits about yourself that might serve as ice-breakers.

To help make the process go quicker, these ice-breakers center around specific topics provided by Match. For example, you’re asked to finish the sentences, “For fun I like to…” and “My favorite places to hang out are….”

Finally, you’re asked to upload a clear photo of yourself. After this, you’ve finished signing up and are able to start accessing your matches. The signup process in its entirety takes around 10 minutes to finish.

How Matching Works

While matching itself is based primarily on descriptions and preferences chosen when first signing up, there are a number of ways to customize your matching on Match, including:

Beyond these matching methods, Match also offers specialized matching for the following niches:

Communicating

Match offers four main ways to communicate with your matches:

Something unique about Match’s messaging system is the ability to set “Smart Filters.” These filters allow you to not directly receive messages from members with what you consider to be "deal-breaker" characteristics, relating to Age, Distance/Location, Smoking, Body Type, Children, Ethnicity and Faith.

Similar to how several social media platforms handle messages from non-followers, if you receive a message from people with “deal-breaker” characteristics, their Messages will go to your Other folder instead of going to your Inbox folder. While they won’t be immediately visible, you can still access these messages if you want to by simply going to your Other folder.

Safety Features

Built into Match’s service are plenty of safety, security, and privacy features. For one, all communication between members on Match.com happens through an anonymous email network, meaning that the names and contact information of all members are kept confidential until the member personally decides to share the information with a potential match.

And to ensure the safety of their users and that members are really who they say they are, every profile and photo is screened by Match’s Customer Care team before it's posted to the site.

Beyond these measures, Match also makes an effort to investigate all reported “vulnerability or security issues” presented by its members and allows members to adjust the visibility of their profiles.

For example, if you choose to hide your profile, it's no longer visible on the site, will no longer appear in search results, and will not be accessible to previous connections on the site. This can allow you to browse people’s profiles more privately without showing up in their "Who's Viewed Me" section.

Additionally, to further help users be able to use their service safely, Match provides an extensive help page and a blog containing tips from dating experts, as well as a customer service team to help with questions.

Pricing

The Verdict

It takes a lot for any company to stick around and stay relevant for over two decades, especially one that deals in the constantly changing world of online dating. The fact that Match has not only stuck around all these years but also currently boasts one of the largest, most diverse memberships in online dating should give you an idea of its match-making power.

With specific matching features for niche communities as well as its proportionally older, educated membership, Match can help just about anyone find a serious, long-term relationship.
